If you are looking for a breathtaking venue to compliment your special day, Cornhill Castle in Biggar is simply one of Scotland’s best. We recently attended the wedding of the lovely Christopher and Jordan, and every time we provide our wedding services at the venue, we are always blown away by the stunning views and high-end wedding services they offer. We have to say it is one of our favourites to film. The happy couple chose our photo and film package, so we were joined on the day by Isaac Craig Photography, and as you can see from the video, it was a dazzling celebration of love.
A Timeless Venue
The first thing you will discover when you arrive at Cornhill Castle is the impressive drive up to the gates. If you visit the website for weddings at Cornhill Castle, you will notice that they offer a timeless wedding package, and we must agree that time has stood still in a fairytale-like way. Everything about the location is magical and elegantly presented. With gorgeous panoramic views, this hotel is nestled in the most outstanding Scottish scenery. It offers the luxury of being close to all the main transport links for Edinburgh and Glasgow (1 hour by car), but at the same time is hidden away, creating the step-back-in-time tranquillity that makes it out of this world.
It really is like stepping into the life of a Disney princess with a grand ballroom, sweeping staircases, and a honeymoon suite located in one of the original castle turrets. In addition, however, the venue takes account of guests arriving by more modern forms of transport with a helipad available by arrangement.
A Rich History
There is also a clever element of royal style meeting modern luxury. The castle itself has a range of 12 luxury suites and grandiose rooms, including the Balmoral Honeymoon Suite, complete with a rainfall shower, sauna and jacuzzi bath, all impeccably presented with a timeless feel. But, in a surprising twist, tucked into the grounds are the Castle Lodges, modern luxury units with stunning outdoor hot tubs that melt effortlessly into the surrounding forest, fitting in perfectly with the panorama. The lodges are perfect for your bridal party and groomsmen to get ready, surrounded by opulence.
The castle has stood on the site, in one form or another, since 1851, although it certainly was not the masterpiece it is now. Originally it was a mansion, although by today’s standards, not much bigger than the average farmhouse. It was mainly down to Glaswegian Alexander Kay, who took ownership in the 1860s and used the wealth he had made as an East Indian merchant to transform the building into the magnificent Castle it is today.
A French Renaissance
Although he was the primary funder for the project, credit for the design must go to architect William Leiper, who was also responsible for Dowanhill Church in Glasgow and Doge’s Palace on Glasgow Green. It stands majestically by the banks of the river Clyde, and the light-coloured freestone gives it a French château look and feel from the Renaissance era. Over the years, the property changed hands, and for a time in the late 1940s was a home for the elderly owned by the regional council. However, it was the purchase of Mr and Mrs Fraioli in 1998 that saw this venue reinstated to glory and become the popular hotel in destination venue it is today.
A Videographer’s Delight
One of the reasons we love this venue so much, and we know that our friends in the photography world will agree, is that there is never a shortage of amazing things to help frame a scene. In 2008, a ballroom suite was installed inside the venue, and outside a wedding pavilion, both of which create the most perfect backdrops for photos and video that we have ever seen.
Not only that, but the changing seasons bring even more new and wonderful things to capture. It is a heavenly venue in the snow and is so beautiful when the snowdrops of spring start to blanket the ground. Everything is in place for an incredible day from dawn to dusk. The venue is fully licensed for civil ceremonies, and the events team have taken care of every little detail. Your guests will arrive on a red carpet and enjoy the black-tie service provided with white linen tablecloths and candelabra centrepieces that can be decorated to fit any wedding theme or colour.
Memories to Treasure
Christopher and Jordan enjoyed the most amazing day, and as the video shows, Cornhill Castle provides a fantastic backdrop. The venue has put everything into creating the perfect aesthetic, from the stunning, well-groomed gardens to every small detail inside the venue. There is also plenty of opportunity to grab some stunning intimate shots and footage just for the bride and groom that they can treasure forever. In just under four minutes, we tried to capture the feeling and experience they had on the day. Their radiant smiles, traditional, kilted Scotsman, and the radiantly beautiful bride really bring this video to life.
The weather was on our side, and we also got a chance to get outside and take advantage of the awe-inspiring backdrop in many of the photos and videos we shot that day. Using a drone in a setting like this also gives you a real sense of just how grandiose the venue is, and as you can see in the video, as the drone pulls back, more of the glorious countryside is revealed. You will also see some of the aerial shots that show the commanding footprint of the castle and the vast expanse of greenery from trees to cultivated lawns. It is fair to say we had the best day helping to capture the magic of Christopher and Jordan’s special day, and we wish them a lifetime of happiness on their journey together as husband and wife.
